Roddick, Federer Wins First Round at U.S. Open

Andy Roddick and Roger Federer both sailed through the first round Monday at the U.S. Open in New York. Roddick’s 6–3, 6–2, 6–2 win over Frenchman Stephane Robert, came as an amusing gift on his 28th birthday. With this win, ninth-seeded Roddick augmented his career U.S. Open record to 36–9. Having won the tourney in 2003, Roddick shot eight aces and had his serve broken only once in the match. He will play Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, who downed Belgian Olivier Rochus 4–6, 7–5, 7–6 (7–0), 6–2, in his next match. The Swiss star, Federer ousted...

Diaz, McCann Homer as Braves Defeat Marlins

The game ending ninth-frame homer from Brian McCann sparked an Atlanta comeback and rallied the Braves to a 7–6 win over Florida. Matt Diaz continued with his tendency to smash the fish, as he belted a two-run home run in the bottom of ninth inning for Atlanta Sunday, to tie the game. Diaz has a .380 career batting average against the Marlins. Marlin’s pitcher Leo Nunez (4–3) walked Brooks Conrad on four pitches and recorded the eighth blown save of the season. Diaz followed with a 2–1 delivery for an opposite-field homer, while grouping in left field with Melky...

Nadal, Federer Top Seeds for U.S. Open

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are on top for the U.S. Open, the final major tennis tournament of the year. Both are the top two seeds for the U.S. Open beginning on Monday, and continuing through to Sept. 12. For the past 13 weeks and 59 weeks in total in his career, Nadal has been running as the No.1 ranked player in the world. After emerging as the victor at Wimbledon and the French Open this year, he collected 10,745 points to take the lead. He is followed by Federer, who is enjoying the second slot in the rankings with 7,215 points and after winning...

Campbell Injured in Niners Vs Raiders Preseason Tilt

The San Francisco 49ers upset the hosts Oakland Raiders, beating them 28–24 in the exhibition clash on Saturday. The Raiders were more concerned by the injury of quarterback Jason Campbell, who carted off the field. With just few weeks left for the NFL season, the injury to quarterback Jason can be devastating for the team.  This has also upset the NFL betting fans, especially those backing the Raiders. Campbell made an impressive beginning of the game by acquiring 4 passes against the Niners. He was seen writhing with pain on the ground after...

Sports Wagering A National Pastime

Sports wagering, buoyed by cyber sportsbook sites, has grown into the favorite recreational activity for American adults. There are no bounds or limitations due to race or religion to inhibit its continued popularity. It is America’s favorite adult pastime. About fifteen years ago, Steve Martin starred in an hilarious comedy called “My Blue Heaven.” In this flick, Martin plays a mob figure from NY who agreed to testify in exchange for entrance into the Witness Protection Program. He is relocated out to Arizona and, within days, runs...

St. Louis Defeats New England, 36–35

The St. Louis Rams recorded a 36–35 pre-season win over New England Thursday, thanks to Josh Brown’s 37-yard field goal in the last minutes of the game. The best part of the game were the incredible performances of Tom Brady, three-time Super Bowl winning quarterback of the Patriots, and the NFL’s No. 1 draft pick this year Sam Bradford of the Rams. Brady threw second-half touchdown passes while playing into the fourth quarter, rallying the Patriots (2–1) to take a 35–27 lead. He finished 18-of-22 passes for 273 yards. Bradford completed 15-of-22...

NFL Preseason– Green Bay Passes Indianapolis 59–24

The Green Bay Packers overpowered Indianapolis 59–24 Thursday, courtesy of the incredible performance by Aaron Rodgers who threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns. Finishing 21-of-29 throws, Rodgers has hit 41-of-53 for 470 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions, in his three appearances. The Packers (2–1) managed to take a 28–17 lead at intermission by scoring the last 21 points of the first half. Passes by Rodgers accounted for two of the touchdowns, while the other came when Korey Hall fell on a fumbled punt in the end zone. A second...

Pittsburgh Steelers Betting Preview

The first month of the NFL season will bring a huge problem for the Steelers, as they will have to find a way to survive without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger was one of the two Steelers who were suspended in the offseason by Commissioner Roger Goodell. While wide receiver Santonio Holmes was traded to the New York Jets. The comeback of strong safety Troy Polamalu will help in augmenting the defense, however Pittsburgh is going to have to hope that he makes a big difference. The defense of the team was not so fabulous...

USA Announces Roster for 2010 FIBA World

USA Basketball finalized the 12-man roster for the 2010 FIBA World Championship Tuesday, as Rajon Rondo, the Boston Celtics star point guard, withdrew his name. After Rondo dropped on the point guard depth chart trailing behind Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook, the 2010 All-Star and All-Defensive First Team apparently felt that he was on the bubble. Although believed to be perfect for coach Mike Krzyzewski’s pressure defense due to his amazing rebounding and defensive skills, Rondo wasn’t capable of providing defense. Rondo, who was thought to be...
