The Pats (3–0) defense forced four turnovers in the bot­tom of the first quar­ter and took a 20-point lead, even as New Eng­land posted a 23–20 win over San Diego on Sunday.

The Charg­ers made a run in the fourth quar­ter with 17 points, how­ever, Kris Brown failed to reg­is­ter a 50-yard goal that might have helped San Diego tie the game in the last minute. Brown was sup­posed to make the attempt from 45 yards, but he was forced behind due to a false start penalty.

Com­plet­ing a season-high 34 for 335 yards, Phillip Rivers led the charge in the fourth with a touch­down and an inter­cep­tion. The Charg­ers receiv­ing core was led by Patrick Cray­ton, who com­pleted 81 yards on seven catches.

The Patri­ots offense fin­ished with just 210 total yards, much lower than their 354 per game sea­son aver­age. Tom Brady com­pleted 20-for-33 for 146 yards and a touch­down for New England.

Even with 19 car­ries each, both the teams gained just 38 yards on the ground, and there was no run­ning game from either side. With this win, the Patri­ots (5–1) are tied with the New York Jets for first posi­tion in the AFC East.
