World Cup Quarterfinals Line-up Set

In the final matches of the round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2010, Paraguay beat Asian giants Japan in a penalty shootout, while Euro­pean cham­pi­ons Spain beat Portugal.

In the first match of the day, Paraguay squeezed through to the quar­ter­fi­nal stage for the first time in their his­tory, as they beat Japan 5–3 on penal­ties. Dur­ing the penal­ties, Yuichi Komano stepped up to make it 3–3 but struck the ball against the cross­bar as Japan’s dream run ended.

In the day’s final match, pre-tournament favorites Spain sent their neighbor’s Por­tu­gal crash­ing out of the tour­na­ment, with a sin­gle goal decid­ing the match. Villa scored in the 63^rd minute as Spain threat­ened to take the game away from Por­tu­gal but the sec­ond never came.

In the first quar­ter­fi­nal Uruguay takes on Ghana and the win­ner of the two will face either Brazil or Nether­lands in the semis. In another mouth-watering clash, Diego Maradona’s men take on the might of the Ger­mans and the win­ner of the two will face either Spain or Paraguay in the semis. Uruguay has odds of 18–1, Brazil are the favorites now, with odds of 5–2, while Argentina and Spain have odds of 9–2 and 14–5 respectively.
