Demand for Technology at World Cup
The debate of the use of technology in football has cropped up its ugly head again. It is now fiercer and more intense than last time, as last night’s matches were marred by wrong decisions by the referees at crucial stages. In England’s match with Germany a shot from Lampard struck the underside of the bar and clearly crossed the line and was not given. While in the Argentina-Mexico game, a goal was permitted in spite of replays being shown inside the stadium that showed that Tevez was clearly offside.
England were thrashed 4–1 by Germany in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2010, but the focus fell on the officials after they overlooked a clear equalizer for Fabio Capello’s team just before the conclusion of the first half.
Drama reigned supreme again at Soccer City stadium, as Carlos Tevez scored a controversial opener for Argentina against Mexico where he was miles offside. However, none could debate Higuain’s second, a thunderous shot. Mexico hit back with Javier Hernandez’s stunner and the match ended 3–1 to Argentina who plays Germany next.
In today’s matches, Netherland face Slovakia, the Dutch are big favorites to win this match with odds of 7–1, whereas Slovakia need a miracle with odds of 200–1. In the other match, 5 time World Cup champions Brazil face an impressive Chilean side. The Samba boys have odds of 100–30, while Chile is at 50–1.
