Jim Sr. was a very gen­er­ous man with his win­nings, which were fairly plen­ti­ful. He loved to play num­bers at the track. He would log the win­ning triple num­bers at Aque­duct. If the 2–3-7 or 2–3-5 had not won in a two week period, he would play those num­bers on the triple regard­less of the odds on the horses. More often than not, he would win the triple within a week or two and thus sur­pass the cost of play­ing the triple over that span of time.

Jim Sr. taught his son the sci­ence of bet­ting the point spreads. There were many book­ies in the East New York sec­tion of Brook­lyn, so I would often accom­pany the pair when they played the point spreads. The les­son that was handed down was that the point spreads must be mon­i­tored closely because a slight fluc­tu­a­tion in point spreads might make the dif­fer­ence between a win and a loss. The other les­son that was handed down from Father to son was that you should esca­late your bet­ting amount when you are in a hot streak, and dimin­ish your amounts when your luck is run­ning cold.
