With all the odds stacked against them North Korea started their FIFA World Cup 2010 Cam­paign on an impres­sive note, hold­ing 5 time FIFA champs Brazil till the 55th min. It took a maraud­ing Maicon to put Brazil 1 nil up and restore some nor­malcy to the pro­ceed­ings. When Elano scored in the 72^nd min, Dunga would have thought the game was dead and buried, but there was another twist to the game when Ji Yun-Nam scored in the 89^th min, still the Brazil­ians were able to hold on till the end and with this cru­cial win go to the top of the table in Group G.

Brazil started the match at break neck speed with Robinho’s nifty skills in the box lead­ing to a shot in the very begin­ning, clearly eager to get an open­ing goal and quell any North Korean resis­tance. How­ever, the break­through never came and the men in red soon started to test Brazil’s defen­sive skills with pierc­ing runs from the cen­tre and wings. North Kore­ans looked quite adept at pass­ing the ball and mak­ing runs, but they lacked in the final third and were not able to put any pres­sure on the Brazil­ian goal­keeper Julio Cesar.

Brazil­ians dom­i­nated pos­ses­sion through­out the match and finally broke the dead­lock in the sec­ond half thanks to a per­fectly threaded pass by Elano to Maicon. Elano than sealed the vic­tory after his run behind the defenders.

North Korea billed as the fod­der for the soc­cer heavy­weight nations of Por­tu­gal, Ivory Coast, and open­ing oppo­nents Brazil, could have received odds of 1000–1 on North Korea win­ning the 2010 World Cup (Soc­cer). Nev­er­the­less, odds aside, North Korea won the hearts and minds of the view­ing pub­lic with their deter­mined and impres­sive performance.
