FIFA 2010 World Cup Favorites Suffer a Setback

World No.2 Spain started their World Cup cam­paign on a dis­ap­point­ing note, when it suf­fered a shock­ing defeat to Switzer­land. The loss ended Spain’s amaz­ing run of 12 straight wins and handed the Span­ish just their sec­ond loss in 50 games. It was also the first time that a Swiss team beat the Span­ish although they played each other 18 times previously.

The cur­rent Euro­pean cham­pi­ons, Spain, dom­i­nated the match with 72% pos­ses­sion and had 24 shots at goal, out of which eight were on tar­get. Amidst this bar­rage of shots, the Swiss goalie Diego Benaglio kept his nerve and in the process secured his fifth con­sec­u­tive shutout for the Swiss in the World Cup, tying the record set by Italy 20 years ago.

Switzer­land took a sur­prise lead in the 52nd minute with Gel­son Fernandes’s scrappy goal. Spain came back with vengeance but the clos­est they came to scor­ing was when Xabi Alonso beat the keeper, but not the post.

Spain who have over­whelm­ing odds of 5/1 to win the World Cup, were left dejected on the field by the rel­a­tive min­nows Switzer­land who have been given odds of 150/1.

Today’s FIFA 2010 World Cup matches see Argentina with odds of 11/2 going against the Asian giants South Korea with odds of 150–1. In the sec­ond match of the day, there is a show­down between 2004 Euro cham­pi­ons Greece who have odds of 750/1 and Nige­ria with odds of 250/1. Group A favorites France who have odds of 28/1 will fight it out with Mex­ico who have been given odds of 100/1.
