NBA Betting: Warriors Coach to Step Down
If the latest reports are to be believed, the Warriors are planning to replace head coach Don Nelson with assistant coach Keith Smart, before the first practice session of the team.
The 70-year-old Nelson became the winningest coach in NBA history, by registering 1,335 victories in 31 seasons coaching Milwaukee, Golden State, New York and Dallas. Best-known for coaching the Warriors, Nelson won five championships largely as a sixth man with the Celtics. However, the ex-Boston forward has never even guided a team to the NBA finals, let alone the title. Nelson led the Warriors to their worst finish (26–56) since the 2001-02 season (21–61).
What impact this change will have on the NBA betting odds for the Warriors in the upcoming season remains to be seen. Currently, LinesMaker has the betting line for the Golden State Warriors at 200 to 1 to win the 2011 NBA championship.
Assistant coach Keith Smart is best known for the game-winning shot hit by him for Indiana in the 1987 NCAA championship game. The 46-year old last served as acting coach of the Cavaliers in 2002, and completed the 9–31 record.
ESPN reports that Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, the new owners of Golden State, are looking forward to conclude the change before the end of the week.
