If the lat­est reports are to be believed, the War­riors are plan­ning to replace head coach Don Nel­son with assis­tant coach Keith Smart, before the first prac­tice ses­sion of the team.

The 70-year-old Nel­son became the win­ningest coach in NBA his­tory, by reg­is­ter­ing 1,335 vic­to­ries in 31 sea­sons coach­ing Mil­wau­kee, Golden State, New York and Dal­las. Best-known for coach­ing the War­riors, Nel­son won five cham­pi­onships largely as a sixth man with the Celtics. How­ever, the ex-Boston for­ward has never even guided a team to the NBA finals, let alone the title. Nel­son led the War­riors to their worst fin­ish (26–56) since the 2001-02 sea­son (21–61).

What impact this change will have on the NBA bet­ting odds for the War­riors in the upcom­ing sea­son remains to be seen. Cur­rently, Lines­Maker has the bet­ting line for the Golden State War­riors at 200 to 1 to win the 2011 NBA championship.

Assis­tant coach Keith Smart is best known for the game-winning shot hit by him for Indi­ana in the 1987 NCAA cham­pi­onship game. The 46-year old last served as act­ing coach of the Cav­a­liers in 2002, and com­pleted the 9–31 record.

ESPN reports that Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, the new own­ers of Golden State, are look­ing for­ward to con­clude the change before the end of the week.
