Mickelson Takes Fourth Major, Improves World Ranking
Phil Mickelson regained the No.2 spot in the men’s world golf rankings, after the completion of bogey-free round Sunday to win the Masters and the season’s first major tournament. Mickelson replaced Steve Stricker, who is again slated at No. 3.
Winning his third green jacket by carding a 5-under 67 on Sunday, Mickelson took a three-stroke victory over Lee Westwood.
Mickelson’s victory was highlighted by a poignant meeting off the 18th tee with his wife Amy, who gave him with a long laudatory embrace. This was Amy’s first appearance at a tournament after she was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer.
Having won the event in 2004 and 2006 as well, Mickelson turned in 16-under 272 three shots ahead of third round leader Lee Westwood, who shot a 71, retaining the fourth rankings slot.
The No.1 spot is still held by Tiger Woods, who, in his return to pro golf after a much publicized six month absence, finished off at 4th place in Masters contending through ups and downs with four eagles, 17 birdies and 14 bogeys.
Looking ahead to the US Open, the betting trendsat LinesMaker have Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods as the early favorites with odds of 9–1 and 7–2 to win the U.S. Golf Open respectively.
