Tiger Shoots Worst Round Ever, Bubba Opens With 64 at Bridgestone

Tiger Woods, the strong favorite to win the WGC-Bridgestone Invi­ta­tional this week­end, seems to be losing track.

At Bridge­stone, where he has won seven times, he shot his worst score ever in 45 rounds since 1997. Woods tied for 70^th in the 81-player field, with a score of 4-over 74. He is 10 shots behind Bubba Wat­son, who is cur­rently leading.

Fol­low­ing his dis­tress­ing round, Woods report­edly said “Just because I like the golf course doesn’t mean I’m going to play well on it. Unfor­tu­nately that’s not the case. You still have to exe­cute, and I didn’t do that today. I did not exe­cute the shots that I wanted to exe­cute today, didn’t shape the ball the way I wanted to shape it, and cer­tainly did not putt well.”

Open­ing with a six-under-par 64, Wat­son is cur­rently enjoy­ing a two-shot lead fol­low­ing the first round. After mak­ing four straight birdies on the back nine prior to a bogey on 15, he retorted with a birdie on the 18th to take the lead. More­over, after shoot­ing 66, Kenny Perry, Phil Mick­el­son, Adam Scott and Graeme McDow­ell entered into a tie for second.

Woods, who had never scored worse than 72 and hasn’t even fin­ished worse than a fifth place tie, had six bogeys against two birdies on the day.

In fact, Woods started as a 4 to 1 favorite to win the tour­na­ment, fol­lowed by Mick­el­son as sec­ond favorite with 8 to 1 and the field included Wat­son at 2 to 1.
