How the Foot­ball Vegas Line was Born

A foot­ball Vegas line is deter­mined fairly. Any­time a line moves it gives a good pointer to the gam­bler of how the gen­eral pub­lic is bet­ting on any par­tic­u­lar game.

Many peo­ple have a mis­con­cep­tion of how a foot­ball Vegas line is born. They will often assume that odd­s­mak­ers get together and come up with a strat­egy that will allow them to make the most money and will then adjust the line accord­ingly through­out the week.

They will study how each defense will match up against the other team’s offense to deter­mine which team has the edge. They com­pare the quar­ter­back ver­sus sev­eral defen­sive posi­tions, all of the offen­sive line posi­tions ver­sus defen­sive line posi­tions, how good of a tack­ling team each defense is, and if the defense gives up big pass plays and if the offense has a big pass play capa­bil­ity. These are sev­eral of the vari­ables that odd­s­mak­ers use when deter­min­ing the open­ing foot­ball Vegas line.

Many gam­blers also believe that odd­s­mak­ers directly deter­mine if a line will go up or down. This also is incor­rect. Once the orig­i­nal line on a foot­ball Vegas line has been deter­mined the odd­s­mak­ers have noth­ing to do with how the line moves because the bet­ting pub­lic directly affects that. For exam­ple, if the New Orleans Saints are play­ing the Miami Dol­phins and the Dol­phins are a two-point favorite as an open­ing foot­ball Vegas line then the line will move accord­ingly to how the money is bet.

If the bet­ting pub­lic puts most of the bet­ting money on the New Orleans Saints then you can quickly notice that the New Orleans Saints drop to a one point under­dog or even become a one point favorite very quickly.
