Football Point Spreads: Not as Confusing as They Look

When you’re not an avid gambler, football point spreads can look a little confusing. However, they are much simpler than they seem; you just have to have a better understanding of what exactly football point spreads are. You may have seen a game where the team was a –3 favorite. You may then find yourself wondering what exactly does that minus mean?

When you’re looking at football point spreads, you have to think about what exactly a point spread is. A point spread is the difference in the two scores of the two teams who are playing each other. When a team is a –3 favorite then you know that they have to win the game by 4 in order for you to win the bet. The minus sign can be a little confusing, but essentially you just have to ignore it. This number is the number that would be used in a straight football bet. If you were to bet on this game, you would need to ask yourself whether or not you think the team that is favored will win by that amount. If you think that they will then you will bet on the favorite. If the number is high like –15 and you don’t think that the team can win by that much, then you will want to bet on the underdog. The unique thing about betting on the underdog is that you can afford for the team you just bet on to lose by 15 points.

At the same time you might see another number by the other team. That number might be something very large, such as 43. You know that the team can’t be expected to win by 43 points, especially in pro football, so you may be wondering what that number is all about? This number is basically your over and under and score. This number is the combined score for the game. So, if you were to bet the over and under you would want to look at your two teams and determine if the game is going to be high scoring or low scoring.

As you can see, football point spreads really are not that difficult. With this knowledge you will be able to look at all football point spreads and you would be able to make an educated guess on which team you should beat on. As with all sports gambling, don’t forget to do your research to determine why the football point spreads are set where they are at. There are many factors that go into these football point spreads and you will want to ensure that you are making a smart bet. Many bettors choose LinesMaker Sportsbook for their football point spreads.
