Horse Betting: Rachel Alexandra to Retire

Rachel Alexan­dra, The 2009 Horse Of The Year, is going to retire. The announce­ment about her retire­ment, which has dispir­ited horse bet­ting fans from all over, was made by her owner on Tuesday.

Rachel Alexan­dra made an impact fol­low­ing her run at Ken­tucky Oaks, where she emerged as a win­ner in all eight starts. Being a three-year-old filly at that time, she ousted three males dur­ing her rise.

Owner Jess Jack­son stated, “Rachel Alexandra’s 2009 cam­paign was one for the ages-one that rac­ing fans will remem­ber through­out time.”

Nev­er­the­less, Rachel Alexan­dra is going to win two of five starts in 2010.

Cur­rently, Rachel Alexan­dra has +700 odds to win the 2010 Breed­ers Cup Clas­sic (Churchill Downs) at Lines­Maker.  On the other hand, listed at +250, Zeny­atta is run­ning as the hot favorite to win the Breed­ers Cup.

Accord­ing to an ESPN.com report, in the Grade 1 Per­sonal Ensign on Aug. 29 Saratoga, Alexan­dra was downed by Per­sis­tently by one length.  Alexan­dra worked a few times after that though.

“I believe it’s time to retire our cham­pion and reward her with a less stress­ful life. We are delighted that she will retire healthy and happy to our beau­ti­ful farm in Ken­tucky,” owner Jess Jack­son said, ““She set stan­dards and records that no filly before her ever achieved. And I sus­pect it will be quite a while before a three-year-old filly ever equals or sur­passes her achieve­ments. Although her fans were thrilled by a series of spec­tac­u­lar vic­to­ries, I believe they, as we, were sim­ply awed time and again by her sheer beauty, courage and athleticism.”

Jack­son also added that he is look­ing for­ward to mate Rachel Alexan­dra with his horse Curlin next year.
