Old Course Set for British Open’s 150th Anniversary

Com­mem­o­rat­ing its 150th anniver­sary, the British Open, the old­est tour­na­ment in golf, is start­ing the first round today. The high­light­ing event of this year will be held at the famous Old Course at St. Andrews, in exis­tence since the 1400s.

John Daly will make another excit­ing start at the British Open, after his sur­pris­ing win at the Old Course fif­teen years ago. How­ever, the most antic­i­pated turn up will be the come­back attempt of Tiger Woods; who won the tour­na­ment each of the last two times when it was con­tested at St. Andrews.  He posted his win in 2000 by eight shots against Thomas Bjorn and Ernie Els, and defeated Colin Mont­gomerie by five shots in 2005. Listed at +350, Woods is still a heavy favorite this week, regard­less of his strug­gles this season.

J.H. Tay­lor, James Braid and Jack Nick­laus have also won the British Open twice on the Old Course. And, if Woods suc­ceed this time as well, he will become the first player to win the tour­ney a third time.

Per­cep­ti­bly, the Mas­ters Cham­pion Phil Mick­el­son, can out­shine Woods in the world rank­ings for the No. 1 spot. Tipped at +1200, Mickelson’s odds are fairly close to Tiger, but the only thing that can go against him is his spotty British Open record

Camilo Vil­le­gas and Justin Rose will accom­pany Woods in the first two rounds. Rose is appar­ently the hottest golfer in the world and has posted two wins on the PGA Tour in the pre­vi­ous two months. Justin Rose (+2000) is another player who can­not be under­es­ti­mated, see­ing his past records at the Trav­el­ers with wins at the Memo­r­ial and AT&T. More­over, Graeme McDow­ell (+2000), the win­ner of the U.S. Open at Peb­ble Beach has also leaped into the Top 20.
