Mickelson Takes Fourth Major, Improves World Ranking

Phil Mick­el­son regained the No.2 spot in the men’s world golf rank­ings, after the com­ple­tion of bogey-free round Sun­day to win the Mas­ters and the season’s first major tour­na­ment. Mick­el­son replaced Steve Stricker, who is again slated at No. 3.

Win­ning his third green jacket by card­ing a 5-under 67 on Sun­day, Mick­el­son took a three-stroke vic­tory over Lee Westwood.

Mickelson’s vic­tory was high­lighted by a poignant meet­ing off the 18^th tee with his wife Amy, who gave him with a long lauda­tory embrace.  This was Amy’s first appear­ance at a tour­na­ment after she was diag­nosed with breast can­cer last summer.

Hav­ing won the event in 2004 and 2006 as well, Mick­el­son turned in 16-under 272 three shots ahead of third round leader Lee West­wood, who shot a 71, retain­ing the fourth rank­ings slot.

The No.1 spot is still held by Tiger Woods, who, in his return to pro golf after a much pub­li­cized six month absence, fin­ished off at 4^th place in Mas­ters con­tend­ing through ups and downs with four eagles, 17 birdies and 14 bogeys.

Look­ing ahead to the US Open, the bet­ting trend­sat Lines­Maker have Phil Mick­el­son and Tiger Woods as the early favorites with odds of 9–1 and 7–2 to win the U.S. Golf Open respectively.
