Duke Captures NCAA Championship

The favored Blue Dev­ils claimed the NCAA Cham­pi­onship after beat­ing But­ler on Mon­day at Lucas Oil Sta­dium.  Bet­ting odds had Duke as seven point favorites, but they barely man­aged 61–59 win and did not cover the spread. The bet­ting action going into the match favored But­ler with the Bull­dogs get­ting 55% of the bet­ting vol­ume at Lines­Maker Sportsbook.

Trail­ing behind, 33–32 at the break, Bull­dogs made late surge, thanks to Gor­don Hay­ward and Matt Howard. With merely five min­utes in the tilt, Hay­ward changed two free throws, pulling But­ler within 55–56. The last one of Howard’s back-to-back layups pulled the But­lers within 60–59, with just a minute remain­ing. Whilst Duke missed scor­ing con­se­quent play, But­ler also failed when Hayward’s shot car­omed off the rim with the rebound going to Brian Zoubek, who got a foul. Duke enjoyed a 61–59 breather after Zoubek made the first foul shot with 3.6 ticks left.

Duke cap­tured fourth NCAA title under coach Mike Krzyzewski, who is now counted among the likes John Wooden and Adolph Rupp as the only coaches to win at least four NCAA championships.

Although, But­ler failed in their bid to cap­ture the NCAA title, the abil­ity and heart of this team can­not be under­rated. But­ler landed in their first-ever NCAA Cham­pi­onship Game by knock­ing off  top seeds like UTEP, Mur­ray State, Syra­cuse, Kansas State and Michi­gan State.
