After the first cam­paign, the Cham­pi­onship was played at the Syra­cuse Dome. The col­lege bas­ket­ball odds on Syra­cuse tak­ing the first Cham­pi­onship cham­pi­onship were heav­ily in their favor. Their com­pe­ti­tion was upstart Vil­lanova. The con­test went into three over­times before Syra­cuse pre­vailed. This excit­ing ini­tial Cham­pi­onship was sim­ply a por­tend of things to come for the Big East, for ESPN, for col­lege bas­ket­ball and the col­lege bas­ket­ball odds investor.

The Big East, over the next twenty-five years, would expand to an incred­i­ble six­teen teams of pow­er­house level; ESPN would evolve into the lead­ing sports tele­vi­sion net­work in the world; col­lege bas­ket­ball would assume a para­mount posi­tion in the ath­letic world; and col­lege bas­ket­ball odds would be the rage of sports­book casino par­lors and online sports­book gam­bling casi­nos on the Inter­net.
