Roddick, Federer Wins First Round at U.S. Open

Andy Rod­dick and Roger Fed­erer both sailed through the first round Mon­day at the U.S. Open in New York.

Roddick’s 6–3, 6–2, 6–2 win over French­man Stephane Robert, came as an amus­ing gift on his 28^th birth­day. With this win, ninth-seeded Rod­dick aug­mented his career U.S. Open record to 36–9.

Hav­ing won the tour­ney in 2003, Rod­dick shot eight aces and had his serve bro­ken only once in the match. He will play Janko Tip­sare­vic of Ser­bia, who downed Bel­gian Olivier Rochus 4–6, 7–5, 7–6 (7–0), 6–2, in his next match.

The Swiss star, Fed­erer ousted Brian Dabul of Argentina 6–1, 6–4, 6–2, at Arthur Ashe Sta­dium. The No.2 seed and five-time cham­pi­onship win­ner reached the finals last year only to be defeated by Juan Mar­tin Del Potro. It could have been his sixth straight Flush­ing Mead­ows title.

Else­where, No.5 seed Swede Robin Soder­ling had a tough time defeat­ing unher­alded Aus­trian Andreas Haider-Maurer, for a  7–5, 6–3, 6–7 (2–7), 5–7, 6–4 win.

Sixth seeded Niko­lay Davy­denko of Rus­sia routed Amer­i­can jour­ney­man Michael Rus­sell, 6–4, 6–1, 6–3 to claim a sec­ond round berth.

Lines­Maker has  Roger Fed­erer as the cur­rent favorite to win the 2010 U.S. Open with +200 odds, fol­lowed by Rafael Nadal (+225) and Andy Mur­ray (+350). Other strong con­tenders to win the title are Novak Djokovic, Andy Rod­dick and Robin Soderling.
