Roddick, Federer Wins First Round at U.S. Open
Andy Roddick and Roger Federer both sailed through the first round Monday at the U.S. Open in New York.
Roddick’s 6–3, 6–2, 6–2 win over Frenchman Stephane Robert, came as an amusing gift on his 28th birthday. With this win, ninth-seeded Roddick augmented his career U.S. Open record to 36–9.
Having won the tourney in 2003, Roddick shot eight aces and had his serve broken only once in the match. He will play Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, who downed Belgian Olivier Rochus 4–6, 7–5, 7–6 (7–0), 6–2, in his next match.
The Swiss star, Federer ousted Brian Dabul of Argentina 6–1, 6–4, 6–2, at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The No.2 seed and five-time championship winner reached the finals last year only to be defeated by Juan Martin Del Potro. It could have been his sixth straight Flushing Meadows title.
Elsewhere, No.5 seed Swede Robin Soderling had a tough time defeating unheralded Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer, for a 7–5, 6–3, 6–7 (2–7), 5–7, 6–4 win.
Sixth seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia routed American journeyman Michael Russell, 6–4, 6–1, 6–3 to claim a second round berth.
LinesMaker has Roger Federer as the current favorite to win the 2010 U.S. Open with +200 odds, followed by Rafael Nadal (+225) and Andy Murray (+350). Other strong contenders to win the title are Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick and Robin Soderling.
