Chelios Retires After 26 NHL Seasons

Chris Chelios officially announced his retirement Tuesday after 26 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cups. NHL betting fans are excited to hear that Chelios will mentor the Red Wings prospects. This is definitely going to improve Detroit’s odds to come out ahead. The Detroit Red Wings are currently listed at +800 to win the 2010-11 Stanley Cup.

The 48-year-old Chelios is the longest tenured and arguably one of the best defenseman in the NHL. He has played in 1,651 NHL games to date, and he is going to occupy a front office position with the Detroit Red Wings, his former team. The 11-time NHL All-Star and five-time First Team All-Star played from 1999–2009 with the Wings and will move into the role of advisor of hockey operations with them now.

Chelios has played for three Stanley Cup winning clubs, the 1986 Canadiens and the Red Wings in ’02 and ’08. He was honored three times with the Norris Trophy as the league’s best blueliner.

At 46, Chelios played for the organization’s AHL farm club, the Grand Rapids Griffins, after joining the Wings again for the 2007-08 campaign and became the oldest player in the 73-year history of the AHL to do so.

Chelios also played for the AHL’s Chicago Wolves before joining the Thrashers for the 2009-10 NHL Season. However, he failed to register a point in a succinct seven game stint with Atlanta.

Chelios entered the league with Montreal after the 1984 Winter Olympics. He represented the United States in the Olympics four times, and also played for the U.S in three Canada Cups (‘84,’87,’91) and two World Cup of Hockey events.

Playing over 1,600 career regular-season games for the Canadiens, Blackhawks, Red Wings and Thrashers, Chelios collected 185 goals and 948 points.

Chelios becomes the oldest U.S. — born hockey player of all-time as he hangs his skates at 48. He is also one of the oldest hockey players in tWings history, second only to former Wings great Gordie Howe, who retired at 52.
