Nadal, Murray and Djokovic Advance to Third Round in Toronto

Sur­viv­ing through a long first-set tiebreaker, top-ranked Rafael Nadal claimed his posi­tion in the third round of the Rogers Cup. Reign­ing cham­pion Andy Mur­ray and world No.2 Novak Djokovic also advanced at the $2.43 mil­lion ATP Mas­ters Tour­na­ment Wednesday.

The reign­ing Wim­ble­don and French Open cham­pion Nadal defeated Stanis­las Wawrinka, 7–6 (14–12), 6–3. At Lines­Maker, Nadal had 1/12 odds to beat Wawrinka (6/1) in the sec­ond round.

Nadal has won this Cana­dian Mas­ters event twice, in 2005 and 2008. In the third round, Nadal will bat­tle Kevin Ander­son, fol­low­ing Anderson’s win over 16th-seeded Sam Quer­rey 7–6 (7–4), 4–6, 6–4.

Mur­ray, seeded fourth, downed Bel­gian Xavier Malisse 7–5, 6–2 while con­tin­u­ing with his suc­cess in the tour­na­ment. Mur­ray was listed at 1/6 to win the sec­ond rounder against Malisse (7/2) at Lines­Maker. Mur­ray will meet Gael Mon­fils in the next round after Mon­fils ousted Thiemo De Bakker 7–5, 6–3.

The for­mer Aussie Open cham­pion, Djokovic snuck past Julien Ben­neteau 7–5, 7–5, after strug­gling ter­ri­bly in the hot con­di­tions. At Lines­Maker, Djokovic was given 1/10 odds to pass over Ben­neteau (11/12) in sec­ond round. This win set up his meet­ing with Roman­ian Vic­tor Hanescu, who elim­i­nated Peter Polan­sky 6–4, 7–6 (7–4).

Else­where, David Nal­ban­dian bat­tled past Tommy Robredo 6–3, 6–0; sixth-seeded Niko­lay Davy­denko ousted Fabio Fognini 7–5, 6–1; and Jeremy Chardy upset ninth-seeded Fer­nando Ver­dasco 6–7 (7–9), 7–6 (7–5), 6–2.

The cham­pion of this week will earn $443,500.
