Team Canada Goes for Hockey Gold

The NHL may be tak­ing a break but per­haps the great­est hockey tour­na­ment is about to begin at the Van­cou­ver Olympics. Team Canada is the favorite to win the gold medal but the high pow­ered Rus­sians not to men­tion the Amer­i­cans and the Swedes are sure to make it a tough bat­tle. Cana­di­ans will be bank­ing on their team to prove to the rest of the world that they can score a gold at their national sport. Some might sug­gest the team owes it to the nation after an embarass­ing per­for­mance in Torino four years ago.

There’s a lot of pres­sure on the Cana­dian ath­letes sim­ply because los­ing at home is not an option. Steve Yzer­man has put together a stel­lar team but there are a few wor­ry­ing issues dog­ging their per­for­mance. Ryan Get­zlaf is a rock solid team mem­ber and a great scorer but is suf­fer­ing from an injured ankle and if the prob­lem con­tin­ues Jeff Carter, a star in his own right but not of Getzlaf’s cal­iber, will replace him. Per­haps worse, a slap shot on the shin on Sun­day has left Sid­ney Crosby limp­ing, although he claims to be fine.

The team is fac­ing a down­turn in the last NHL per­for­mances of some of it’s super­star play­ers. Goaltender’s Mar­tin Brodeur and Robert Luongo both got pulled, Luongo after giv­ing up five goals in a loss to Min­nesota Wild. Jarome Iginla and Eric Staal are not hav­ing their usual suc­cess either. It remains to be seen if the team can regain the strength it seems to have lost over the last two weeks.
