USA Hockey Wins Shocker Over Canada

On Sun­day Team USA stunned Team Canada and a hockey mad nation. It was no mir­a­cle on ice but it still ranks as one of the biggest upsets in Olympic hockey history.

The US hockey team proved they were a skilled and deter­mined team beat­ing Canada 5 –3 on Sun­day. They have now earned not only their place in the quar­ter finals, but Sweden’s 3–0 vic­tory over Fin­land also gave the US hockey team the No. 1 seed in the tour­na­ment – a result that has amazed so called experts and fans alike.

Brian Rafal­ski scored two goals and Ryan Miller was spec­tac­u­lar as he defended the US goal from a bar­rage of shots. Miller stood up to Canada out­shoot­ing the US 45–23 by mak­ing 42 saves. “It’s prob­a­bly one of the biggest games I’ve ever played,” Miller said. “When things hap­pened we responded. We didn’t get ner­vous or anx­ious. We kept play­ing.” At the other end of the ice, Cana­dian goal­tender Mar­tin Bro­duer appeared sloppy at times and had two mishaps that led directly to US goals.

Amer­i­can fans went crazy and a flour­ish of red and white flags filled Canada Hockey Place as Ryan Kesler scored an empty net goal in the final minute to seal the vic­tory. The US will play the win­ner of the Switzer­land – Belarus game on Wednes­day at 3 p.m EST.

What now for Canada? They still have a shot at the gold medal but face a much tougher road. They will need to beat Ger­many in a qual­i­fy­ing match and then face the tal­ented Rus­sians in the quar­ter finals.
