With the big game just a week away, the Saints are enter­ing the Super Bowl as 5.5 point under­dogs against the favored Colts. LinesMaker, like most major sports­books, is get­ting heavy action early on the Colts. Typ­i­cally, the under­dog bet­tors will wait for the line to be dri­ven upwards and get their Super Bowl bets in later in the week.

 While the Colts are look­ing to repeat his­tory, the Saints are look­ing to cre­ate their own. To do so, Drew Brees and the Saints need to come out fast and hard to shut down the Colts early. The Saints will also need big per­for­mances from Reg­gie Bush, Jeremy Shockey, and Dar­ren Sharper. Reg­gie Bush may well be the most dynamic player in the NFL and is able to pro­duce yardage in many ways. Jeremy Shockey is capa­ble of 100+ receiv­ing yards any­time he steps on the field and Dar­ren Sharper’s big hits ener­gize his team.

The bat­tle in the trenches will be extremely cru­cial. If the Colts play with­out a healthy Dwight Freeney, it will allow the Saints’ back­field to receive rather than pass protect.

The Colts will need solid out­ings from receivers Austin Col­lie, Pierre Gar­con, and Dal­las Clark. Rest assured Pey­ton Man­ning will be steady and con­fi­dent as always, so the issue becomes whether the receivers will be as well.   The Colts’ line­back­ers are going to have to use their speed to shut down the explo­sive Reg­gie Bush.

At the end of the day, it will really boil down to whether Pey­ton Man­ning gets solid pass pro­tec­tion. If so, the Colts pass­ing game will be extremely hard to stop. Given the oppor­tu­nity, when Man­ning and the Colts get their shot­gun in rhythm they become nearly unstoppable.
