Johnson Prepped for Fourth Brickyard 400 Win

The Sprint Cup Series is head­ing towards the famous Indi­anapo­lis Motor Speed­way for the Brick­yard 400, after a week off. The four-time defend­ing series cham­pion, Jim­mie John­son, is all set to join the elite group who has suc­ceeded at least four or more times at the Indy.

John­son has won the pres­ti­gious 400-mile race at Indy the last two years and three of the last four. If John­son wins this year as well, he will join the league of Indy­Car leg­ends A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears, who hold four vic­to­ries each in the Indi­anapo­lis 500. F1 star Michael Schu­macher still claims the record for most wins at Indy, for win­ning the United States Grand Prix five times at Indy with four vic­to­ries in a row from 2003-06.

Inter­est­ingly, look­ing at the past 16-year his­tory of the Brick­yard 400, dri­vers who have won this race have ulti­mately suc­ceeded in claim­ing the Cup cham­pi­onship that sea­son eight times, accom­pa­nied the last two years by John­son. Listed at +200 at Lines­Maker, John­son is the cur­rent favorite of bet­tors to win the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Cham­pi­onship. Denny Ham­lin and Kyle Busch are sec­ond and third favorite, with +400 and +450 odds, respectively.

Jeff Gor­don, who hap­pens to be Johnson’s Hen­drick Motor­sports team­mate, has won the Brick­yard 400 in 1994, ’98, 2001 and ’04. Gor­don, has not won any of the last 48 races but has fin­ished third, fourth or fifth in the last five races.

Gor­don is presently sec­ond in points, while Kevin Har­vick holds a 103-point lead over him. How­ever, the bet­tors are favor­ing Gor­don (+600) over Har­vick (+900).
