McDowell Captures US Open at Pebble Beach

The US Open saw a new cham­pion this year as Graeme McDow­ell fin­ished with a 3-over-par 74 on Sun­day. It finally fin­ished with a one-shot win over French­man Gre­gory Havret at Peb­ble Beach. With this vic­tory, McDow­ell, who hails from North­ern Ire­land, became the first Euro­pean to win a U.S. Open in 40 years and wins his first major championship.

While the big names in golf had a very ordi­nary day on Sun­day; McDow­ell took full advan­tage of this and ben­e­fited from their misfortunes.

It was a dra­matic final round as Dustin John­son; the overnight leader started the day with a triple and dou­ble bogey on the sec­ond and third holes while the big chal­lengers like Woods, Phil Mick­el­son and Ernie Els, all failed to impress leav­ing Havret as McDowell’s great­est threat.

Havret, who is ranked No. 395 in the world, was a sur­prise runner-up to McDow­ell at one-over 285, par­tic­u­larly since the French­man holed a 50-foot put in a qual­i­fier just to get to the US Open.

McDow­ell was a five-time win­ner in Europe, count­ing a vic­tory at the Wales Open two weeks ago; he had never won in the United States until Sunday.

By the end odds mak­ers had Mick­el­son as a 3/2 favorite. Other short odds to win were Ernie Els 5/1, while McDow­ell who was the even­tual win­ner had odds of 6/1, and Dustin John­son the overnight leader had odds of 9/1.
