Wigginton’s Sac Fly Leads Orioles to Win
Ty Wigginton’s sacrifice fly in the 11th inning Thursday helped in breaking the final tie of the game, as the Baltimore Orioles bested the Kansas City Royals 6–5 to snap a five-game losing streak.
Nick Markakis led off the third with his ninth homer for the Orioles. The Royals managed a 5–3 lead in the fourth inning, with two-run single by Yuniesky Betancourt.
However, a homer by Corey Patterson helped Baltimore to tie in the eighth; they won it by scratching out a run against Blake Wood (0–2), the fifth Kansas City pitcher, in the 11th.
Drawing a walk to open the 11th, Cesar Izturis went to third on a single by Bryan Roberts. Wigginton’s second sacrifice fly scored Brian Roberts in the 11th. Alfredo Simon was helped out by a double play, even after giving up two hits in the bottom of 11th, and he managed to collected his 15th save.
David Hernandez (5–7) bore the winners tag, as he hit three in two innings of relief. This was Royals’ fifth loss in a row.
With over two-thirds betting action on their side, the Royals (-135) were the favorites to beat the Orioles; but, much to the disappointment of the bettors things did not work out for them.
