Wigginton’s Sac Fly Leads Orioles to Win

Ty Wigginton’s sac­ri­fice fly in the 11th inning Thurs­day helped in break­ing the final tie of the game, as the Bal­ti­more Ori­oles bested the Kansas City Roy­als 6–5 to snap a five-game los­ing streak.

Nick Markakis led off the third with his ninth homer for the Ori­oles. The Roy­als man­aged a 5–3 lead in the fourth inning, with two-run sin­gle by Yuniesky Betancourt.

How­ever, a homer by Corey Pat­ter­son helped Bal­ti­more to tie in the eighth; they won it by scratch­ing out a run against Blake Wood (0–2), the fifth Kansas City pitcher, in the 11th.

Draw­ing a walk to open the 11th, Cesar Izturis went to third on a sin­gle by Bryan Roberts. Wigginton’s sec­ond sac­ri­fice fly scored Brian Roberts in the 11th. Alfredo Simon was helped out by a dou­ble play, even after giv­ing up two hits in the bot­tom of 11th, and he man­aged to col­lected his 15th save.

David Her­nan­dez (5–7) bore the win­ners tag, as he hit three in two innings of relief. This was Roy­als’ fifth loss in a row.

With over two-thirds bet­ting action on their side, the Roy­als (-135) were the favorites to beat the Ori­oles; but, much to the dis­ap­point­ment of the bet­tors things did not work out for them.
