Cleveland Downed the Yankees, 4–1
Josh Tomlin pitched into the eighth inning to tame the Yankees in his major league debut Tuesday, as the Cleveland Indians overwhelmed New York 4–1. Matt LaPorta also contributed with two RBI’s for the Indians.
Tomlin (1–0) replaced the injured Aaron Laffey after being evoked from Class AAA Columbus. He baffled the Bombers while limiting them to one run on three hits, while walking none and fanning two.
Inspite of giving up a pair of hits in the ninth, Carlos Perez collected his 10th save. Cleveland scored on catcher Francisco Cervelli’s slip-up and Matt LaPorta added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, giving them a lead.
CC Sabathia (13–4) lost for the first time in about two months, hunting for his 150th career win. The All-Star lefty gave up four runs (two earned) on nine hits in seven frames. Finishing 0-for-4 on this 35th birthday, Alex Rodriguez again failed to hit his 600th homer.
Drawing over 73 % of the betting action, the Yankees (-240) were clear favorites over the Indians (+200) to win this game. However, the result came as a huge disappointment for most bettors.
