MLB 2011 Season Commences in March

Major League Base­ball released its sched­ule for 2011 Tues­day. The MLB sea­son will see an early start on March 31, fea­tur­ing the come­back of the Chicago Cubs to Fen­way Park.

The sea­son open­ers will include five matchups — The Brew­ers ver­sus the Reds, the Angels ver­sus the Roy­als, the Braves ver­sus the Nation­als, the Tigers ver­sus the Yan­kees and the Padres ver­sus the Cardinals.

This year the sea­son will begin on Thurs­day, instead of the Sun­day or Mon­day. The last time the reg­u­lar sea­son started on a Thurs­day was in 1976.  The final games of the sea­son will be played on Wednes­day, Sep. 28. This has been done to pre­vent any base­ball games in Novem­ber, while the World Series this sea­son is slated for November.

Speak­ing from a bettor’s per­spec­tive, the New York Yan­kees (+160) are the favorites at Lines­Maker to win the World Series this sea­son, fol­lowed by the Philadel­phia Phillies (+400) and the Tampa Bay Rays (+600).

The Commissioner’s Spe­cial Com­mit­tee for On-Field Mat­ters had sug­gested these changes in sched­ule this year for an early start and fin­ish. Angels man­ager Mike Scios­cia, one of four man­agers on the 14-person com­mit­tee, said, “I think that any way that we can con­dense the sea­son a bit [is bet­ter for the game], I think there’s a real issue with weather.”

The return of the Cubs to Fen­way, their first appear­ance there since 1918, will be the main attrac­tion of the inter­league slate, which started play­ing in 1997. While the Cubs-Red Sox series was played in 2005 at Wrigley Field.

The 82nd All-Star Game is slated for July 12 at Chase Field in Phoenix.
