Shaving Points and Integrity of NCAA Football Betting

NCAA football betting has been researched recently and it has been found the players have been accused of point shaving and of course, that is a big no-no. For those of you who don’t know, point shaving is when a player controls the amount of points in a game to benefit an anonymous gambler. In return, the anonymous gambler gives the player a cut of the winnings. It’s a very dishonorable act by the player and the gambler and is frowned upon by all sports programs, from college to the pros.

Most of these schemes are sniffed out by Las Vegas spread makers and bet takers. When overly large bets involving unimportant games start to be prevalent, it will raise an eyebrow or two. NCAA football betting is supposed to be fun and point shavers take the integrity away from the game, the fans, and themselves. It is a shameful act and is usually punished accordingly.

In a recent report on NCAA football betting, federal authorities charged a University of Toledo football player in connection with a point shaving scheme. Scooter McDougle, a Toledo football player, recruited players to take part in a scheme orchestrated by a Sterling Heights man only known as “Gary”, in accordance to a complaint filed in United States district court. Gary allegedly offered ten thousand dollars to one player if he agreed to sit out a football game, as well as providing other players with groceries, cash, merchandise, and other gifts, said the complaint.

The charge carries a sentence of up to five years in prison and a 250,000-dollar fine if he is convicted. McDougle claims he accepted a car and other items of value but insisted that he never altered his performance on the field. The Detroit Free Press reported that there were no indications that any of the players threw any of their games during the season.

The way this “Gary” could have benefited from this is if the players slowed the pace of the game down, he could bet the unders, insuring a win every time. They say that cheaters never prosper and this incident proved to be no different. Renowned Sportbook Linesmaker.com frowns upon the act of shaving points in NCAA football and is well known for it’s integrity throughout the industry.
