Darchinyan Beats Perez on Technical Decision

LOS ANGELES —Vic Darchinyan defeated Yonnhy Perez by a tech­ni­cal deci­sion after their sched­uled 12-round ban­tamweight fight Sat­ur­day was stopped at 1:07 of the fifth round because Perez had a cut near his eye.

The fight at the Nokia The­atre went to the score­cards because the cut between Perez’s eyes was the result of an acci­den­tal head butt.

An extremely aggres­sive Darchinyan (36–3-1, 27 knock­outs) dom­i­nated a list­less Perez (20–2-1, 14 KOs) from begin­ning to end to win by three iden­ti­cal scores of 50–44.

Darchinyan, a south­paw who has held titles at fly­weight and junior ban­tamweight, put Perez down in the sec­ond round and landed dozens of pun­ish­ing lefts in his most-impressive per­for­mance at 118-pounds.

The fight­ers’ heads col­lided a minute into the fifth round, after which blood gushed from a cut above his right eye.

Dr. Paul Wal­lace stopped the fight moments after exam­in­ing it.

“He suf­fered an arte­r­ial bleed,” Wal­lace said. “One of his blood ves­sels had been cut and it was pump­ing directly into his eye. He gave no indi­ca­tion he wanted to stop.”

Darchinyan con­firmed that the cut was the result of an acci­den­tal head.

“It was a head butt,” Darchinyan said. “But if it wasn’t a head butt, I would’ve knocked him out.”

The fight was the third-place match in Showtime’s ban­tamweight tournament.

IBF ban­tamweight title­holder Joseph Agbeko was sched­uled to fight Abner Mares in the tour­na­ment final but Agbeko pulled out on Wednes­day because of a back injury.

Agbeko took the IBF title from Perez.
