Margarito to Return on May 26

Tuc­son (BOXING/Newsfeed) — For­mer wel­ter­weight champ Anto­nio Mar­gar­ito will return to the ring on May 26 in Tuc­son, Ari­zona against an unde­ter­mined — but most likely hand-picked — oppo­nent. Mar­gar­ito, 34, has lost three of four fights since being exposed as a hand-wrapping cheater. The fight will be tele­vised on Spanish-language net­work Azteca America. A win may put Mar­gar­ito in line for another big pay­day later this year against mid­dleweight beltholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.. After twelve back-and-forth rounds, Leonard was awarded a dis­puted 12-round split deci­sion: 118–110 and 115–113 for Leonard and 115–113 for Hagler. The debate over who should have got­ten the deci­sion con­tin­ues to this day. Did Leonard truly do enough to win the fight and take the mid­dleweight crown from Hagler? Or did he sim­ply exceed expec­ta­tions (remem­ber, he came into the fight as a big under­dog) and impress the judges with flashy flur­ries that... 

Nonaire, Chavez Jr. Win Decisions

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. retained his WBC mid­dleweight title with a twelve round unan­i­mous deci­sion over tough Marco Anto­nio Rubio. Scores were 118–110, 116–112, and 115–113. Chavez Jr. strug­gled to make weight — and then put on nearly 22 pounds in the 30 hours between the weigh-in and the fight — but looked strong through­out and did not fade down the stretch. How­ever, he report­edly skipped a manda­tory post-fight drug test so there may be more to this story. Com­bine this with his arrest for drunk dri­ving just two weeks prior to the fight and it looks like the 25-year-old... 

Trainer Angelo Dundee Dies at 90

Angelo Dundee, the Hall of Fame trainer who guided Muham­mad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and George Fore­man to world titles, has died in Clear­wa­ter, Florida at the age of 90. Dundee’s other cham­pi­ons included Car­men Basilio, Willie Pas­trano, Jimmy Ellis, Luis Rodriguez, Ralph Dupas, José Nápoles, Sugar Ramos, Pin­klon Thomas, Trevor Berbick, Wil­fredo Gómez and Michael Nunn. With Dundee’s pass­ing, the sport of box­ing has lost one of its great­est ambassadors. Vitali Klitschko Outpoints Dereck Chisora

40-year-old Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC heavy­weight title with a unan­i­mous — but tougher than expected — deci­sion over Dereck Chisora of Great Britain. Chisora made head­lines by slap­ping Klitschko’s face at the weigh in, spit­ting water in the face of Wladimir Klitschko before the fight and get­ting arrested for brawl­ing with fel­low British heavy­weight David Haye at the post-fight press conference. Dur­ing the fight, Chisora did bet­ter than expected. He was never a threat to actu­ally win the fight but he showed a good chin and did what he could to com­pete... 

Povetkin Narrowly Outpoints Huck to Retain Belt

Unde­feated Alexan­der Povetkin retained his WBA heavy­weight belt with a much tougher than antic­i­pated points win over WBO cruis­er­weight champ Marco Huck. Povetkin looked good early but tired as the fight wore on and was almost out on his feet when the bell rang to end the twelfth and final round. Povetkin won an Olympic gold medal in 2004 but after this fight it’s easy to see why for­mer trainer Teddy Atlas kept him away from the Klitschkos … he would’ve been destroyed.
