Top Seeds Start Slow

Defend­ing cham­pion Roger Fed­erer and No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic both dodged a bul­let in their first-round matches Mon­day in the first day at Wim­ble­don. The 16-time Grand Slam cham­pion came back from two sets down to beat Colom­bian Ale­jan­dro Falla 5–7, 4–6, 6–4, 7–6 (7–1), 6–0. Djokovic needed five sets to pass over a deter­mined Bel­gian Olivier Rochus 4–6, 6–2, 3–6, 6–4, 6–2.

Fifth-seeded Andy Rod­dick was a straight-set win­ner over Rajeev Ram 6–3, 6–2, 6–2.   No. 7-seeded Niko­lay Davy­denko was pushed to his limit in a 6–3, 6–7 (3–7), 7–6 (7–3), 5–7, 9–7 win over Kevin Anderson.

Upsets for the day saw Flo­rian Mayer beat­ing 11^th seeded Marin Cilic 6–2, 6–4, 7–6 (7–1); Denis Istomin beat 20th-seeded Stanis­las Wawrinka 6–7 (5–7), 6–1, 2–6, 7–6 (7–4), 6–3; and Peter Luczak ousted 30th-seeded Tommy Robredo 2–6, 7–6 (7–3), 6–2, 7–5.

In the women’s sec­tion No. 2– seeded Venus Williams had an easy vic­tory on Mon­day but French Open cham­pion Francesca Schi­avone was ousted on the first day of Wim­ble­don. Williams was 6–3, 6–2 win­ner over Rossana De Los Rio, Schi­avone, seeded fifth, fell to Vera Dushev­ina 6–7 (0–7), 7–5, 6–1. No. 4-seeded Jelena Jankovic got past Laura Rob­son 6–3, 7–6 (7–5); and eighth-seeded Kim Cli­jsters routed Maria Elena Camerin 6–0, 6–3

Jan Hajek plays British favorite Andy Mur­ray, with Mur­ray hav­ing odds of –5000 and Hajek at +1500. With odds of –2000 Fer­nando Ver­dasco weighs over Fabio Fognini at +800. Robin Soder­ling with the odds of –700 is a favorite to beat Robby Ginepri at +400 to win the match.
