Canadian Olympic Hockey Team Announced

Over 1.5 mil­lion view­ers tuned in to the live tele­vised announce­ment of Canada’s Olympic men’s hockey team yes­ter­day.  Mil­lions more in this hockey mad nation waited with eager antic­i­pa­tion for the Olympic team selec­tions through word of mouth and other media sources. The Win­ter Olympics 2010 will be held in Van­cou­ver next month.

Among the 23 play­ers named for the Olympic team were Sid­ney Crosby, Scott Nie­der­mayer and Mar­tin Brodeur. The squad will be try­ing to improve upon its dis­ap­point­ing fin­ish four years ago in Italy. The men’s hockey team has won gold a record seven times since the first Games in 1920.

Pitts­burgh Pen­guins for­ward Crosby, was con­tro­ver­sially left out four years ago, this time around he was a cer­tain to make the squad. Ana­heim Ducks defense­man Scott Nie­der­mayer, will be cap­tain for Van­cou­ver 2010. He will anchor a defense that includes four play­ers see­ing their first Olympic action — Chicago Black­hawks team­mates Dun­can Keith and Brent Seabrook, Nashville Preda­tors’ Shea Weber and 20-year-old Drew Doughty of the Los Ange­les Kings.

Record-breaking goal­tender Mar­tin Brodeur, of New Jer­sey Dev­ils’, was also named to the squad who will face a lot of pres­sure to achieve gold to sat­isfy their fel­low Cana­di­ans. Brodeur was in the team when Canada ended a 50-year gold medal drought at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.
