Cotton Bowl Betting
Cotton Bowl Betting One of the Originals
The New Year was officially ushered in by the duo of Guy Lombardo and Dick Clark, which gave a multi-generational flavor to the New Year’s toast. As youngsters, if you’re from my era of the baby boomers, we all grew up with the New Year being welcomed in by legends from two different generations.
Guy Lombardo represented the pre-war (World War II) and Dick Clark was our representative. Since we were fortunate enough to own two televisions, I could walk back and forth from room to room on New Year’s Eve and catch a glimpse of the rockers on Dick Clark’s show while feigning enjoyment of the Guy Lombardo’s presentation that my folks were watching. On New Year’s Day, the tradition was watching the four Bowl games: Cotton, Sugar, Rose and Orange Bowls. Usually, as I remember, they were played in that order with the Cotton Bowl kickoff at Noon. The game was played in Dallas and Lindsey Nelson was the announcer. It was a double treat for me since I had had the pleasure of hearing Lindsey announcing the Met games during the baseball season. Invariably, my Uncles Joe and Billy would show up about fifteen minutes before kickoff, just in time to get in on the Cotton Bowl betting.
My dad would argue with my uncles until a middle-of-the-road bet could be placed. The Cotton Bowl betting marked the actual start of the New Year in my home. It would also dictate my dad’s mood for the rest of the afternoon depending on the outcome of his Cotton Bowl betting. Our Cotton Bowl betting excitement reached a peak in the 70’s when Notre Dame scored a late touchdown to defeat the University of Houston to capture the National Championship under Coach Ara Parsighian. Those memories are as vivid today as they were in the days when my dad would call the bookie, and the New Year would commence with the Cotton Bowl betting. My dad is now amazed at the growth of the popularity of gambling on the internet and it ease of use, he now goes to online sportsbook Linesmaker to place his Cotton Bowl Betting.
