D.J. Richard­son and Bill Cole both scored on two 3-pointers, for 16–0 early in the game, to rally No. 25 Illi­nois over the Iowa Hawkeyes for an 87–77 win on Wednes­day in the open­ing game of the Big Ten Conference.

Attract­ing nearly 75 per­cent of the NCAA bas­ket­ball bet­ting action, Illi­nois was the clear favorite against Iowa among Lines­Maker bet­tors to suc­ceed in the cam­paign. With the col­lege bas­ket­ball bet­ting lines at –5, Illi­nois delighted the major­ity of bet­tors by defeat­ing the Hawkeyes.

Iowa, which was look­ing for­ward to record the 700th league vic­tory in school his­tory, man­aged to take a 15–11 lead. How­ever, Illi­nois responded with its cru­cial surge, as Richard­son and Cole had two 3-pointers each for 12 points.

Demetri McCamey chipped in with 20 points and 10 assists for Illi­nois. Richard­son and Mike Davis con­tributed with 17 and 15 points, apiece.

Com­ing off two straight losses to Illinois-Chicago and Mis­souri, Illi­nois (11–3, 1–0) shot 66 per­cent from the field. Illi­nois man­aged to hit 13-of-18 shots from 3-point range.

Matt Gatens paced the Hawkeyes (7–6, 0–1) by pulling in 21 points in the loss.
