Big Names Fail to Impress

FIFA World Cup 2010 saw another big team fal­ter as Milan Jovanovic and Vladimir Sto­jkovic teamed up to bring Serbia’s World Cup cam­paign back on track and derail  Germany’s quest to win the FIFA World Cup for the fourth time.

Jovanovic scored from close range in the 38th-minute just min­utes after Ger­many striker Miroslav Klose was shown his sec­ond yel­low card. The Ger­mans started the match aggres­sively, play­ing some attrac­tive foot­ball and looked set to hand out another crush­ing defeat, but Klose’s dis­missal changed every­thing. Ser­bia beat all odds when they drew with Ger­many, Ser­bia had odds of 66–1, while the Ger­mans 11–1.

Slove­nia drew against USA after Val­ter Birsa and Zla­tan Lju­bi­jan­kic gave them a two noth­ing lead, but Lan­don Dono­van got one back and led a spir­ited attack on the Slove­ni­ans in the sec­ond half before Michael Bradley res­cued a point. Mau­rice Edu might have thought he scored the win­ner for the Amer­i­cans but his goal was dis­al­lowed con­tro­ver­sially. Slove­nia had odds of 300–1 and the Amer­i­cans were heav­ily favoured and had odds of 80–1.

Fabio Capello had a very dis­ap­point­ing birth­day in Cape Town, as their own sup­port­ers booed Eng­land off the field fol­low­ing a lack­lus­ter per­for­mance against Alge­ria. As the game went on, their pass­ing grew steadily worse and worse and the match ended 0–0. England’s shock­ing per­for­mance was high­lighted by the fact that Alge­ria has been given the worst odds to win the World Cup at 1000–1, while Eng­land is at 11–1.
