The Goal. Gold for Canada

It will sim­ply be remem­bered as the goal. A goal that put an end to one of the great hockey games of all time, as young Cana­dian star Sid­ney Crosby put a quick shot between the pads of Amer­i­can goal­tender Ryan Miller at 7:40 of over­time to lift Canada to a 3–2 win and the Olympic gold medal.

The goal was quickly fol­lowed by a mas­sive erup­tion of not only the over­whelm­ingly Cana­dian crowd at Hockey Canada Place but an entire hockey mad nation from coast to coast. As the Cana­di­ans cel­e­brated, a heart­bro­ken Ryan Miller, who was with­out ques­tion was the best goal­tender in the tour­na­ment, remained momen­tar­ily frozen, stunned in disbelief.

It was a remark­able fin­ish to pos­si­bly the most antic­i­pated game to ever take place in Canada. The Cana­dian squad con­trolled the bal­ance of play through­out the game which saw Canada lead 2–0 on goals by Jonathan Toews and Corey Perry. The young and tal­ented Amer­i­can team con­tin­ued to cre­ate oppor­tu­ni­ties and bat­tled back to send it into over­time with just 24.4 sec­onds left in reg­u­la­tion time. Iron­i­cally, the son of a Cana­dian hockey great, J.P. Parise, from the famed 1972 Sum­mit Series against the for­mer USSR, Zach Parise stuffed in a rebound past a sprawl­ing Cana­dian goal­tender Roberto Luongo to dash the Canadian’s hopes for gold.

In the over­time, how­ever, Canada dom­i­nated the four-on-four play and it ended when Team Canada vet­eran Jarome Iginla fed the puck from the cor­ner to Crosby. Although Crosby had played well dur­ing the tour­na­ment he had been held off the score sheet in the two pre­vi­ous games. The extra room in over­time gave him the space to get a step on the US defense­man and score the great­est goal of his young life.
