Molder Expects Younger Players to Win Sooner on PGA Tour

Frys.com Open win­ner Bryce Molder said after his win that he was unpre­pared for years to be in the pres­sure cooker down the stretch on tour. Look­ing at the 20-something phe­noms turn­ing pro now, how­ever, Molder sees them suc­ceed­ing much sooner than he did.

“I think what you’re see­ing right now you’re going to see from now on really,” Molder said Wednes­day, refer­ring to the likes of Rickie Fowler, Rory McIl­roy, Mar­tin Kaymer and others.

“They’re just a lit­tle more pol­ished, a lit­tle bit more ready than we were at that age, maybe not phys­i­cally, but just men­tally I think it’s put in their mind a cou­ple years earlier.”

The prime exam­ple Molder gave was Rickie Fowler, who won for the first time as a pro­fes­sional last week in Korea.

He said, “[T]here’s cer­tain play­ers, Rickie Fowler, that I’m really impressed with because if you just watch his demeanor, it just looks like he can’t strug­gle for very long because he has such a good short mem­ory and he also has such a good per­spec­tive when he plays well.”

When Bryce Molder came out a decade ago on the PGA Tour, he was labeled can’t miss as the fourth player named a four-time All-American. 142 starts later, Molder finally earned his first win at the Frys.com Open on Sunday.

Now one him­self, said vet­er­ans are at a dis­ad­van­tage com­pared to their younger peers. The tour plebs don’t have the same kind of scar tis­sue Molder had to fight to get his first win.

“I don’t think it’s fair they’re play­ing against us. They don’t know how hard the game is yet. Until they’ve had to go through a cou­ple years of strug­gling, they shouldn’t be allowed to play out here,” he said.
