Gary Patterson Says Drug Numbers Are ‘Somewhere in the Middle’

Gary Patterson says drug numbers are ‘somewhere in the middle’ Posted by Ben Kercheval on February 25, 2012, 4:07 PM EST A little over a week after news broke that members of TCU’s football program were arrested as part of a school-wide drug sweep, coach Gary Patterson broke his public silence on the matter. Speaking to the media after the Horned Frogs’ first spring practice, Patterson incorporated the timeless coachspeak of “it’s never as bad as you think, never as good as you think” to the drug situation when he acknowledged...

Slow Start Again Proves Costly

Whether it’s lack of confidence or competence, the slow starts by the Leafs sure are speeding up their death watch. There they were Saturday night in the latest must-win situation reeling from their worst stretch since early last season. So what do you get from them out of the gate against a Washington Capitals team that hasn’t looked anything like playoff material either and was making their third start in four nights? A game that was as good as over before it started with a goal 32 seconds in and a second a little more than three minutes...

Conceding Putts: What’s Your Strategy?

During match play, such as at the Ryder Cup or WGC Accenture Match Play Championship or a tournament at your club, golfers have the option to concede an opponent’s putt. When a concession is offered, the opponent doesn’t have to hole the ball. During telecasts of match play tournaments, there are invariably times when the announcers start discussing the strategy and tactics of conceded putts. When should you offer a concession, when should you not? What’s your take? We’d like to hear how you handle concessions in your own match play matches....

Mayock Pleads With Luck, Griffin, Blackmon to Work Out Sunday

Mayock pleads with Luck, Griffin, Blackmon to work out Sunday Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2012, 3:53 PM EST As the “A” team of Rich Eisen, Charles Davis, and Mike Mayock wrapped their coverage of Saturday’s on-field workouts of the big uglies and David Puddys (offensive linemen and tight ends), Mayock turned to Camera One and made a pitch to three of the key players who won’t fully embrace the opportunity to show what they can do on Sunday. “Andrew Luck. C’mon,” Mayock said. “I watched you the last couple years at the Manning...

Texas A&M, Mizzou Big 12 Buyouts Close

STILLWATER, Okla. — The chairman of the Big 12-s board of directors says the conference has agreed to terms with Texas A&M and Missouri on the schools’ exit penalties but the league’s members must still give final approval. Oklahoma State President Burns Hargis said Friday that the schools agreed to the terms “long before” West Virginia’s entry into the conference was finalized this month. The university’s board of regents voted Friday to grant Hargis power to execute final settlements, and he says every conference member must take...

Drug Testing Procedure Must Be Examined

Updated Feb 25, 2012 2:49 PM ET All is well. That is what both management and the union say about baseball’s drug program. That, even after the Ryan Braun case, is what both sides want you to believe. But all is not well. Some players are upset and confused that Braun was not suspended after testing positive for a synthetic testosterone. Seth Levinson, an agent whose clients include Dustin Pedroia, Jonathan Papelbon and David Wright, said Friday that all previous drug tests are now in question. “When the process is compromised, then the integrity of all...

Crazy F1 Testing in the Off-Season

I cannot remember the last time it was so difficult to figure out which teams had created the best cars through looking at winter testing. This year there have been so many different leaders of the time sheets after two weeks of testing that it is impossible to read anything into which teams have the best cars. Today the fastest car was a Sauber, driven by Kamui Kobayashi. Could the teams really be doing all they can to hide their game? There must be some kind of psychological war going on here, certainly. Something akin to the kind of thing that happens...

Rangers Ship Wolski to Panthers

New York, NY — The New York Rangers have traded forward Wojtek Wolski to the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman Michael Vernace and a 2013 third round draft pick, the team announced on Saturday. Wolski has played in only nine games this season for the Rangers, recording three assists. He had surgery to repair a sports hernia on November 8 and missed 27 games. In 402 career NHL games with Phoenix, Colorado and the Rangers, Wolski has netted 91 goals to go with 158 assists and 107 penalty minutes. Vernace, 25, has split time this season between the San Antonio...

Browns G.M. Doing Well After Surgery

Browns G.M. doing well after surgery Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2012, 12:48 AM EST Several of you have pointed out a report that Browns G.M. Tom Heckert has had “serious” surgery, which has kept him from attending the Scouting Combine. The information comes from WTAM radio, the team’s flagship station in Cleveland. The Browns are sharing no details about the situation. “Tom’s personal medical issues are his private affair and not for the club to comment on,” Browns spokesman Neal Gulkis told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain...
