Lion’s Den Opens at Children’s Hospital in Ottawa

OTTAWA - At first glance, it might look like a scene from an arcade or a child’s birthday party: brightly lit walls surrounding a playroom in which kids play interactive games online or video games on a row of Xbox consoles. But this isn’t just any room, and these aren’t just any kids. It all starts with the sign hanging at the far end of the room that reads, “The biggest assist happens off the ice.” In a partnership between the National Hockey League, the Ottawa Senators and Companions in Courage Foundation, Pat LaFontaine’s charitable endeavor,...

After All the Shouting, No. 1 Is at Stake

Updated Jan 27, 2012 2:28 AM ET MELBOURNE, Australia There is every chance the women’s final on Saturday night at the Australian Open here at Melbourne Park will be a high-quality contest of great intensity between two attractive players of differing experience. EYES ON MELBOURNE Check out all the action from Melbourne Park. As an added bonus, Maria Sharapova — who reached No. 1 in the world in August 2005 before injury struck — and Victoria Azarenka — currently No. 3 — will be vying for that top ranking, with the winner taking over from Caroline...

AL Suddenly Has Six Super Teams

Updated Jan 27, 2012 2:45 PM ET A baseball executive asked me Thursday if I could remember a time when six teams in one league looked as strong on paper as the Super Six in the American League. I honestly couldn’t recall, but I will say this: It’s going to be tremendously fun this season watching the Rangers, Angels and Tigers as well as the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays. Not all of the Super Six will fulfill expectations. The 2008 Tigers were a last-place flop after adding first baseman Miguel Cabrera and left-hander Dontrelle Willis. The 2011 Red Sox, proclaimed...

Jeb Burton has been racing in NASCAR’s Whelen All-American Series and eventually will drive Hillman’s No. 27 Chevrolet in the Truck Series. Ward Burton last competed in...

Fernandes: First Point Caterham’s 2012 Target

Caterham boss Tony Fernandes has admitted he will be a happy man if his team can score their first world championship point this season, after their new CT01 challenger was officially revealed to the public on Thursday. Caterham’s best 2011 race placing was 13th, a result they achieved in Australia, Monaco and Italy, but with the addition of KERS just one of several factors set to lift their performance in 2012, Fernandes is keen to break into the top ten. “Target wise, I have been quoted as saying I want us to score a point this year and that really...

Coyle, the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive backs coach, interviewed with the Dolphins on Wednesday. Pees Takes Over as Ravens Defensive Coordinator

The Baltimore Ravens wasted no time finding a replacement for recently departed defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, promoting linebackers coach Dean Pees to take over control of the team’s defense on Friday. Latest mocks all in one place “Just always respected his work,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said during a news conference. “All the way through the ranks he’s been considered one of the top coaches around.” Pees had coached the linebackers in Baltimore for the past two seasons after serving as the New England Patriots defensive...
