Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning said Tuesday he has no plans to retire and that his recovery from neck surgery is on schedule. Manning told a group of reporters Tuesday he doesn’t plan to stop playing and that his recovery from a third neck surgery continues to be on schedule. “My plan hasn’t changed,” Manning said at a hotel after Media Day at Lucas Oil Stadium. “I’m on track with what the doctors have told me to do, and I’m doingthat. I’m rehabbing hard.” When asked about reports he may soon retire, he said that talk is premature:...

After Schiano’s Departure, Rutgers’ Flood Thrown Into the Spotlight

So maybe Kyle Flood can exchange notes with Penn State’s Bill O’Brien about what it’s like to take over a major college football program when hardly anybody knows who you are. Flood, who just a few days ago was a little known offensive assistant, has suddenly been catapulted into the college football spotlight, as he was on Tuesday afternoon introduced as the new head coach at Rutgers. Flood replaces Greg Schiano, who stunned Scarlet Knights fans by accepting the head coaching job with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. Schiano’s...

On the ‘D’-Fence: Rookie Rearguards Who Rank

The 2012 NHL All-Star Game is in the books and as always it was an exciting event that showcased the skills of some of the best and brightest the league has to offer. Though there were 42 vets selected to participate in the game itself, the League’s selection committee also chose 12 rookies to take part in the weekend’s activities. That is what we are going to do here today. Considering that we had a short week in the fantasy realm due in large part to those All-Star festivities, we figured that we would point out a handful of rookies that are starting...

This Week: Phoenix Open and Qatar Masters

The PGA Tour heads to Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the European Tour stays in the Persian Gulf region for the Commercialbank Qatar Masters this week. On Sunday, Kyle Stanley blew a 3-stroke lead with one hole to play at the Farmers Insurance Open, then lost the playoff to Brandt Snedeker. Stanley’s chance at redemption begins this week; he, as well as Snedeker, is in the field in Phoenix. Stanley should talk to Robert Garrigus about final-hole meltdowns and how to forget about them. At the 2010 St. Jude Classic, Garrigus also...

Pirelli Targeting Even More Entertainment With 2012 Tyres

Ahead of their second season as Formula One’s sole supplier, Pirelli have presented the new tyres that will be used in 2012. The key characteristics of the new rubber — developed together with the teams in response to the latest aerodynamic regulations — are squarer profiles, increased grip, and softer, more competitive compounds with consistent degradation. Pirelli say their objective is to ensure entertaining races that remain unpredictable all the way to the chequered flag, with two to three pit stops per race, a strong emphasis...

Raiders’ McKenzie Says Allen Got Rave Reviews Around NFL

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Reggie McKenzie started researching Dennis Allen as a potential coaching candidate this past season when he first heard the Oakland Raiders might hire him as a general manager. He talked to some of Allen’s former players and coaching colleagues and only got rave reviews. When McKenzie sat down with Allen two weeks ago in Denver for his first interview, he knew he had found his man. Debate: Oakland’s Mr. Right? “The bottom line: He was what the doctor ordered,” McKenzie said Monday at a news conference to introduce...

Houston Texans offensive coordinator Greg Knapp has agreed to take the same position with the Oakland Raiders, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. He also worked with new Raiders coach Dennis Allen from 2004 to 2005 as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. All-Star Game Latest Chapter in Slovaks’ Long Friendship

KANATA, Ont. — In the Team Chara locker room at Scotiabank Place during the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game, three longtime friends cracked jokes in their native language that no one else in the room could understand. This was the Slovak section of Team Chara, a row of stalls occupied by three of the game’s best players. With Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara serving as captain and namesake for the winning team in the 12–9 contest, Slovakia was set to figure prominently in the game. But a three-goal MVP performance from countryman Marian...
