Stanford TE Ertz Out, WR Owusu Uncertain

STANFORD, Calif. – Tight end Zach Ertz will most likely be sidelined for at least two weeks for No. 4 Stanford with a lower right leg injury, leaving one of the team’s most productive units shorthanded.

The school announced Monday that Ertz is expected to miss Saturday’s game at Oregon State and the Nov. 12 matchup against sixth-ranked Oregon that could determine the Pac-12 North champion. However, he has not been completely ruled out next week when the Ducks (7–1, 5–0) visit Stanford Stadium.

I’ll be back before you know it!” Ertz wrote on his Twitter page minutes after the announcement.

Ertz appeared to injure his right knee on the opening kickoff of Stanford’s 56–48 triple-overtime victory at Southern California on Saturday night. He spent the remainder of the game standing on the sidelines with crutches.

Ertz has 22 catches for 308 yards and three touchdowns this season as part of a tight end trio that creates constant mismatches and has become Andrew Luck’s favorite targets. Without him against USC, the Cardinal (8–0, 6–0) couldn’t run their most effective formation: Ertz and fellow tight ends Coby Fleener and Levine Toilolo on the field together.

The thrilling win at the Coliseum came at other costs.

Chris Owusu’s status is still unclear after the leading wide receiver suffered what appeared to be another concussion. USC safety T.J. McDonald leveled Owusu with a hit to the head, drawing a personal foul penalty that extended Stanford’s touchdown-tying drive late in regulation.

A team spokesman said there was no immediate update on Owusu’s status.

The speedy receiver also suffered what Stanford coach David Shaw described as a “minor concussion” in a win at Washington State in mid-October. Owusu, who has 370 yards receiving with two touchdowns this season and doubles as a kick returner, was limited to seven games last year due to various injuries– including at least one concussion.

Starting strong safety Delano Howell has missed the last two games with a hand injury. Shaw has said he was hopeful Howell would be back for Oregon State, and certainly should return against the Ducks.

Kicker Jordan Williamson and offensive tackle Cameron Fleming are day to day, and punter David Green is expected to play at Oregon State. Their injuries were not disclosed.
