Col­lege foot­ball spreads can be dif­fi­cult to under­stand if you don’t know how to use them or what they mean. Read on to learn more about spreads, what they are and what they mean.

It’s hard to judge col­lege foot­ball spreads when you’re not sure what a spread is. In most cases, one of the two teams in the spread is at least slightly bet­ter than the other. Rather than offer­ing odds, like 3:1, which would pay­out three times what you bet if you win, a point-spread sys­tem was devel­oped in Las Vegas. This sys­tem allows the gam­bler to win straight money and the bookie to only have to pay straight money.

Most peo­ple believe it’s a much bet­ter way to make and take bets. It gives the under­dog some points before the game starts, a slight advan­tage, you could say, when in real­ity, it’s a sort of hand­i­cap allow­ing the gam­bler to take the under­dog to win with a few extra points. So the under­dog may lose the game, but if they lose by fewer points than the team was given, the gam­bler wins the bet.

The col­lege foot­ball spreads point sys­tem is based on the strengths and weak­nesses of both teams. The spread mak­ers put all this infor­ma­tion together and play the whole game out on paper. They then decide a clear-cut win­ner and fig­ure out a set num­ber that the stronger foot­ball team will win by. When there is no clear-cut win­ner, they leave the game at a “pick ‘em”. A pick ‘em allows the gam­bler to only pick a win­ner. They won’t have to cover any spread; they’ll only have to win the game.

Pick ‘ems can be dif­fi­cult. If the experts have dif­fi­culty fig­ur­ing out a win­ner, how are you sup­posed to? Pick ‘ems are intrigu­ing but extremely dif­fi­cult to call right so it may be wise to try to steer clear of them if at all pos­si­ble. You won’t have to worry much about pick ‘ems though, as you’ll only see them a few times dur­ing the col­lege foot­ball season.

With the lack of tal­ent at some schools col­lege foot­ball spreads can be hard to judge at times. Teams can some­times run away with the game in the first five min­utes.
