Derrick Rose Says It’s Stern’s Fault, Yada Yada… Wait, Who’s in Charge of the Union?

This is the paragraph I’m supposed to blockquote you and pull the news story off of. Guess what? A member of the player’s union thinks David Stern and the owners are mean and it’s their fault for the lockout! TOTALLY NEW INFORMATION. “It’s sad. It’s very sad. But everybody knows it’s not our fault. It’s definitely not our fault. If it was up to us, we’ll be out there playing,” the reigning league MVP said Saturday at the State Street Foot Locker in the Loop. I think that it’s wrong. I know that they can easily take care of it and not take advantage...

Garnett, Kobe, Pierce Shut Down 50/50 Talks Before Deadline on Their Own

In a way, I’m kind of glad for stuff like this. I mean, the lockout had become downright depressing. Both sides were “miles apart” but “ready to make a deal.” We’ve lost games, good games, which may or may not be rescheduled. Both sides seem more interested in rhetoric than progress, and it’s become about ego as much as it is about money, both of which are pretty disgusting in the times we live in. But this? This is pretty funny. Not “JaVale McGee said the players were folding to a half-dozen reporters with tape recorders in their hands right in front of his face...

Fisher, Hunter Respond to Stern With Tough Words of Their Own

After David Stern’s Magical Media Tour on Thursday and Friday, the players needed to respond before a mediator puts the lock on both sides next week. And after making an “armed and dangerous” reference, union executive director Billy Hunter continued along with union president Derek Fisher in pushing back hard against the commish. Various quotes from the and other sources: Fisher expressed optimism that there would be a season, which is contrasted by the dour approach of both Stern and Hunter. Except Fisher’s assertion is based more...

NBATV Ratings Plummet During Lockout… Don’t You Like “Teen Wolf?”

NBA TV has been as hard to watch as a Shawn Marion jump shot during the lockout. Banned from showing any current NBA players, they have been relegated to showing nothing but classic games. No summer league games, no shows previewing the upcoming season, no shows talking fantasy hoops, no drop ins on training camp. Which led to these tweets from TV Sports Ratings: NBA TV had an average audience of 11,000 viewers last week (fewest ever). Among measured ad-supported cable nets, only Fuel (7k) had less. Since start of lockout, NBA TV has aired Fish/Saved...

If We Get a Season, Not All the Canceled Games Are Gone Forever

There’s a whole lot of confusion over the first two weeks of the season that have been canceled. The league doesn’t know how many games will be canceled, so it can’t make any announcements on the status of the games that have already been canceled. The assumption is that the games that were lost are gone forever. But that’s probably not the case. From the New York Post: The Post has reported that over the last two months NBA schedulemaker Matt Winnick has designed a handful of contingency schedules including 74-game, 70-game, 60-game and 50-game...

Carmelo Anthony Says He Made the Right Decision With Trade

It was an ugly mess watching Carmelo Anthony force his way out of Denver last season. But for Anthony, it was the right move. He looks at the ongoing lockout, the lost games, the limbo he would be in as a free agent and thinks how he handled everything worked out for the best. That’s what he told Newsday. “I think I did the right thing,” Anthony told reporters Wednesday while promoting the release of his new Jordan Brand sneaker, Melo8, in Manhattan… “For the average person out there who really thought I was just trying to get up and just leave for no reason,...

Pete Carroll Tries to Recruit LeBron to Seahawks. Jokingly.

The Seattle Seahawks passing game could use some help. They are 25th in the NFL at 205 passing yards per game and, while they complete a pretty average number of passes a contest, they average just 6.6 yards per passing attempt (26th in the league). They need a big-time receiver. Like maybe LeBron James. On Tuesday, LeBron tweeted asking what was the deadline for an NFL team to sign a free agent. That led to a little back-and-forth with Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who was always good at recruiting. (Right USC?) Wednesday, Carroll tweeted out the photo you...

Stoudemire Calls Turiaf, Diaw “Smelliest Players in the League”

Columnist and ESPN host Dan Le Batard recently had Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire on his show, and at around the 3:00 mark of the interview, he asked Stoudemire who the smelliest players in the league are. Here’s Stoudemire’s response, courtesy of I am a GM and The Basketball Jones: Dan Le Batard: Kevin Love told us that Ronny Turiaf smells worse than anyone in the NBA. Can you confirm? Amar’e Stoudemire: Confirmed. Confirmation, granted. Dan Le Batard: Your teammate is the worst smelling player in the NBA. Who is second? Amar’e Stoudemire: I dunno, man....

President Obama “a Little Heartbroken” Over NBA Lockout

President Barack Obama has problems, ones that dwarf yours and mine. In the best of times the president has life-or-death issues to deal with daily, and these are not the best of times. Like you and me, he needs an occasional escape rom those problems. Like you and me, the NBA and basketball can provide that. Except not now, not with the NBA locked out and the first two weeks of the season already thrown in the trashcan. That is not sitting well with the president, according to The Hill (via Trey Kirby’s twitter account). President Obama said Tuesday...

Players Union to Host Meeting in Los Angeles Friday

The NBA players union cannot win the public relations war — the fans will side with the owners, especially after the blunder-filled “let us play” twitter campaign Monday — and their only hope of salvaging what they have of the last labor deal is to stay unified. So far that has gone well — with the NBA’s stars leading the way the union is not breaking ranks. Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett have made pleas with the players to stay unified, and the NBA rank-and-file loved Dwyane Wade snapping back at David Stern in a meeting a couple weeks back. To keep...
