FSU Replaces West Va. With Savannah St.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State has replaced perennial college football power West Virginia on its 2012 schedule with little Savannah State. The Seminoles will host The Tigers, from the Football Championship Subdivision, on Sept. 8 as a replacement opponent for the Mountaineers. West Virginia broke the front end of a home-and-home contract with the Seminoles to ostensibly accommodate their move from the Big East Conference to the Big 12. Athletic Director Randy Spetman and his top associate, Monk Bonasorte, said Wednesday they...

Texas Planning Statue of Ricky Williams

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas will honor former Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams with a statue at the football stadium that be unveiled at the Longhorns’ annual spring game on April 1. The 8-foot, 1,000-pound bronze figure will stand next to a statue of Earl Campbell, another former Texas Heisman winner. Williams won the Heisman in 1998 and finished his Longhorns career as the NCAA career rushing leader. He recently retired from the NFL. Texas retired William’s No. 34 jersey in 2000. Cleveland artist David Demming, who taught at Texas for 26 years, was commissioned...

Florida State RB Wilder Arrested

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Authorities say Florida State tailback James Wilder Jr. was arrested after a confrontation with deputies. Florida’s Leon County Sheriff’s Office reports the 19-year-old was at a Tallahassee apartment Tuesday when deputies went to arrest a 20-year-old woman for missing a court appearance. As a deputy escorted the woman to a patrol car, a sheriff’s report says, Wilder stepped between the deputy and the woman and pushed the deputy. Wilder was arrested and charged with obstructing a law enforcement officer without violence and battery...

ACC Files Complaint With SEC Over Vandy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt officials say the Atlantic Coast Conference has filed a formal complaint for one of its members with the Southeastern Conference involving the Commodores’ football team. Vice chancellor David Williams said in a statement Wednesday that the SEC informed Vanderbilt of the complaint. “We are complying with SEC and Vanderbilt procedures and are conducting an investigation on the matter,” Williams said. The SEC declined comment, and the ACC did not respond to a request for a response. Maryland...

Boise Stays in Mountain West Next Season

BOISE, Idaho — Boise State’s highly successful football program won’t be moving to the Big East early. The school announced on Wednesday that despite repeated conversations with the Big East, the Broncos will remain in the Mountain West for the 2012–13 athletic seasons. In a statement, the school said there were too many obstacles and financial concerns to make the move a year earlier than expected. “While we have had several discussions with the Big East and the WAC in moving our sports into those two leagues a year earlier than previously...

Temple in Talks to Join Big East

PHILADELPHIA — Temple and the Big East are talking about the Owls rejoining the conference as soon as next season. MAC Commissioner Jon A. Steinbrecher said in a statement Wednesday that his league is “aware that Temple has been in discussions with the Big East regarding membership.” A person familiar with the talks says the school and the Big East are trying to negotiate a deal that could have Temple in the league for all sports by next season. The person spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the talks...

Top WR Recruit Neal Signs With Irish

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Highly rated wide receiver recruit Davonte Neal from Scottsdale, Ariz., has signed a letter of intent with Notre Dame. The 5–10, 175-pound Neal was considered the highest-rated recruit still unsigned by most analysts. He helped Chaparral High School to back-to-back championships. Neal caught 62 passes for 1,113 yards and 16 TDs, rushed for 1,317 yards and 14 TDs, returned three kickoffs for TDs and posted two punt return TDs in 2011. Notre Dame lost out on its top receiver recruit on signing day back on Feb. 1 when Deontay Greenberry signed with Houston...

BCS in No Rush to Decide on System

How many teams will be allowed to play for the national championship is just one of the many issues being considered by the guys who run the BCS. When the games will be played is a hot topic, too. The 11 conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director met Tuesday in Dallas, along with BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock to resume discussing possible changes to college football’s postseason. While there seems to be growing support for creating a four-team playoff to determine a champion, how exactly that would work and when...

What Has Happened to Randy Edsall?

I’m having a hard time remembering any coach more universally despised than Randy Edsall. Edsall, who at one point was viewed as something of a savior during his mostly successful tenure at UConn, has not enjoyed quite the same warm-and-fuzzy reception down in College Park, Md. Indeed, it can justifiably be said that Edsall’s stay with Maryland has thus far been nothing short of a disaster. There are myriad reasons, of course. There was the shameless and gutless manner in which he left UConn. There is the 2–10 record he delivered in his first...

Vikings Reach Deal to Use TCF Stadium

MINNE OLIS — The Minnesota Vikings say the organization has reached atentative deal with the University of Minnesota on how much the team will pay touse TCF Stadium while a new Vikings stadium is being built. Vikings spokesman Lester Bagley declined to name a dollar amount, but saidthe “agreement in principle” would add about 3,000 temporary end zone seats tothe 50,000-seat stadium. Bagley says other details need to be resolved beforeboth parties sign off on the deal. The Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/xnotMv ) says the Vikings paid $ 1.7 millionto...
