The race, Play the King Stakes, takes place annu­ally at Wood­bine Race­track in Toronto, Ontario. A Grade II sprint race, it is open for horses three years old or above. It is run on green turf at a dis­tance of 7 fur­longs and car­ries a purse of $200,000.

Play the King Stakes, which was ear­lier known as Toronto Bud­weiser Breed­ers’ Cup Hand­i­cap inau­gu­rated in 1987, is an offi­cial prep race for Breed­ers’ Cup Turf Sprint.  The race got its present name from and in the honor of King­haven Farms’ 1988, Cana­dian Horse of the Year, Play the King.

The race is run on green turf at the dis­tance of 7 fur­longs. Ear­lier, it was run on dirt with a total dis­tance of 6 furlongs.
