Lakers Win Their Sixteenth NBA Title

The NBA sea­son ended on Thurs­day with the Boston Celtics and Los Ange­les Lak­ers play­ing the sev­enth game of the cham­pi­onship series. The final quar­ter was played at a fran­tic pace with hits and misses from both sides and finally the Lak­ers came out stronger and in the process won their sec­ond straight NBA title with an 83–79 deci­sion over Boston. Bryant cap­tured his fifth title and the Lak­ers their sixteenth.

The Celtics most def­i­nitely missed their cen­ter Kendrick Perkins, who sat out the game after sprain­ing his knee in Game 6, though Paul Pierce had a good game and led a bal­anced Boston attack 18 points and 10 rebounds. How­ever, the Celtics did not have enough fire­power despite a heroic defen­sive effort in the first three quarters.

For the Lak­ers, Kobe just looked out of sync miss­ing 18 of 24 shots and fum­bling passes. The star of the match was not Bryant for a change, the big man Paul Gasol stepped up to the plate and with his ster­ling per­for­mance won all the acco­lades. Gasol had impres­sive stats of 19 points, 18 rebounds, the most by any player on the court and had four assists. Bryant had 23 points, while Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 18. Los Ange­les shot only 32 per­cent from the field in the defense-dominated game, but the Lak­ers out-rebounded the Celtics 53–40.

The Lak­ers went in to this game as favorites, their odds at –280, mean­ing player wagers $280 to win $100, while the Celtics had odds of +240, player wages $100 to win $240.
