Google and NASCAR Team Up to Pull April Fool’s Day Prank
Kristin Watt — On Sunday, April 1, 2012, on the main page for the popular Google search engine, the organization was announcing a new partnership with NASCAR. For those who have been a fan of Google for the past few years, this was obviously one of the annual April Fool’s Day gags. Each year, Google tries to go all out to make up absurd headlines or products that are almost, but not quite, believable. Among many different ones over the years, one of my favorites was “Google Translate for Animals,” which was described as exactly what it sounds like. It was a program that was supposed to translate animal sounds into understandable languages.
This year the main gag was that Google’s self-driving car would be a key element for the new Google NASCAR team. The graphic depicted a NASCAR driver behind the wheel with his hands up to demonstrate that the car had piloted itself through a maze of cones. There was even an option to vote on the paint scheme for the new car. There were five choices including a youtube.com paint scheme and an Android paint scheme.
The idea is an intriguing one for sure. It would reduce the event to being a mechanical competition. The main competition would be who could build the fastest car and who could ensure that the car would be in tact by the end of the race. Though it is interesting, it would not be feasible with the current NASCAR organization. With no drivers needed, there would be a whole new set of safety risks and benefits but the whole system would need to be changed.
It was a cool joke. Obviously, it was false but perhaps to someone who didn’t realize what day it was, or had no idea how NASCAR worked, it would have caused a brief pause. It is a neat idea and it would be awesome for a high profile brand such as Google to get involved with NASCAR. It was some nice, apparently free, publicity for a sport that is currently growing. It would be great if the extra publicity led to extra viewers for the upcoming race.
Kristin Watt has been a NASCAR Winston Cup, now Sprint Cup, fan for as long as she can remember starting way back when she was a little girl and her mother would sit on the couch with her every Sunday during the season to watch the races. Back then, they were fans of Bill Elliott and newcomer Davey Allison.
