Geor­gia Tech Defeated Cum­ber­land Col­lege in 1916 220–0

In 1916, the Geor­gia Tech foot­ball team played a home game against the Cum­ber­land foot­ball team. Ear­lier in the sea­son, Cum­ber­land had defeated Geor­gia Tech. At the time, how­ever, the Cum­ber­land Col­lege foot­ball pro­gram was com­posed of inex­pe­ri­enced play­ers. Geor­gia Tech defeated Cum­ber­land by a score of 222–0.

Chicago Bears Defeated Wash­ing­ton Red­skins in 1940 73–0

In the 1940 NFL cham­pi­onship game, which was also the first national broad­cast of an NFL game on the radio, the Chicago Bears played the Wash­ing­ton Red­skins. Ear­lier in the sea­son, the Bears suf­fered a nar­row defeat to the Red­skins. The Bears came back in force to get the shutout vic­tory by a dom­i­nat­ing 73–0.

Detroit Red Wings Defeated New York Rangers in 1944 15–0

In 1944, the New York Rangers lost to the Detroit Red Wings 15–0. This is one of the biggest blowouts in NHL his­tory. Despite the high score, the goal­keeper for the Rangers still made 43 saves dur­ing the night. Though 10 play­ers got goals that night, Syd Howe man­aged to get a hat trick.

Sec­re­tariat Won the Bel­mont Stakes in 1973 by 31 Lengths

Sec­re­tariat won the Triple Crown in 1973 with a com­mand­ing per­for­mance in the Bel­mont Stakes. Dur­ing the final race of the three race chal­lenge, the horse won by 31 lengths. This is one of the largest mar­gins of vic­tory in mod­ern horse racing.

Aus­tralia Defeated Namibia in 2003 142–0

Dur­ing a match for the 2003 Rugby World Cup, dur­ing group play, Aus­tralia was fac­ing Namibia. Namibia had lost both matches so far in group play while Aus­tralia had won both. Namibia was not a favorite going into the match, but fans didn’t expect to wit­ness the 142–0 blowout that occurred. Aus­tralia dom­i­nated the game and went on to become run­ner up to England.

Adema Defeated Stade Olympique de L’Emyrne in 2002 149–0

In soc­cer, rarely do teams score more than 20 points. How­ever, in 2002, when Adema was to play Stade Olympique de L’Emyrne, the record was set for the biggest mar­gin of vic­tory when one team man­aged to put 149 points on the board, and the other team did not score. Though Stade Olympique de L’Emyrne lost, the team lost on pur­pose. The coach of the team instructed play­ers to put the ball in their own net as much as pos­si­ble. The play­ers man­aged to rack up 149 points before the game ended.

Ned Jar­rett Wins South­ern 500 in 1965 by 14 Laps

In 1965, Ned Jar­rett man­aged to get a deci­sive vic­tory at the South­ern 500 at Dar­ling­ton Race­way. The unprece­dented 14 lap mar­gin of vic­tory meant that he was ahead of all the other dri­vers by more than 19 miles. It was the largest mar­gin of vic­tory in the his­tory of the sport.

Canada Defeated Den­mark in 1949 47–0

On open­ing day of the 1949 World Ice Hockey Cham­pi­onships in Swe­den, Canada faced Den­mark and defeated the team 47–0. Though this is cur­rently not the biggest mar­gin of vic­tory, the record stood until 1987 when New Zealand lost to Aus­tralia 58–0.

Mike Tyson Defeated Dan Cozad in 1982 in Eight Seconds

In just eight sec­onds dur­ing an ama­teur match for the Junior Olympics in 1982, Mike Tyson got the knock out against Dan Cozad. Tyson, who was just 16, was already show­ing that he was a tal­ented boxer. This would be just the first of many vic­to­ries for the leg­endary, and con­tro­ver­sial, boxer.

St. Fran­cis Defeated Robert Mor­ris in 1996 71–1

Though the 1996 game was not a shutout, St. Fran­cis Uni­ver­sity was the win­ner in one of the biggest blowouts in the his­tory of base­ball. Despite the game being called after just four innings, St. Fran­cis man­aged to rack up an impres­sive 71 points to Robert Mor­ris’ one.
