Peca Hangs Them Up
One of the NHL’s all-time best two-way forwards, Mike Peca, retired yesterday. Now 35 years old, Peca has spent 13 seasons in NHL and was also a member of the Canadian Olympic squad that won an Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City.
Peca became an unrestricted free agent after spending the past two with the Columbus Blue Jackets. “I truly have enjoyed my entire career as an NHL player,” said Peca. “Playing the game at the highest level, with and against the top hockey players in the world, has been a pleasure.
In 864 NHL games with Vancouver, Toronto, Columbus and the New York Islanders, Peca scored a total of 176 goals. “Today, I can honestly say that I am able to walk away from the game as a player knowing that I always left everything I had on the ice,” he said. “I appreciate everything hockey has given me, and I hope that I earned the respect of my great teammates and opponents by playing the only way I knew how to.
