Peca Hangs Them Up

One of the NHL’s all-time best two-way for­wards, Mike Peca, retired yes­ter­day.  Now 35 years old, Peca has spent 13 sea­sons in NHL and was also a mem­ber of the Cana­dian Olympic squad that won an Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City.

Peca became an unre­stricted free agent after spend­ing the past two with the Colum­bus Blue Jack­ets. “I truly have enjoyed my entire career as an NHL player,” said Peca. “Play­ing the game at the high­est level, with and against the top hockey play­ers in the world, has been a pleasure.

In 864 NHL games with Van­cou­ver, Toronto, Colum­bus and the New York Islanders, Peca scored a total of 176 goals. “Today, I can hon­estly say that I am able to walk away from the game as a player know­ing that I always left every­thing I had on the ice,” he said. “I appre­ci­ate every­thing hockey has given me, and I hope that I earned the respect of my great team­mates and oppo­nents by play­ing the only way I knew how to.
